Drewan Baird. Oudtshoorn. 16 April 2014. 05h40. DA MEC Anton Bredell failed yet again yesterday to act in the matter of DA Eden Mayor Wessie van der Westhuizen.
A source in Bredell’s office indicated around midday that Bredell was to remove Wessie… I laughed over the phone line, at the probability that the DA would remove a sitting coloured ex-ID mayor days before a general election .
On January 7, 2012 Eden MM Godfrey Louw appointed ENS Auditors to conduct a forensic audit in the district municipality. On April 10, 2013 the Eden council resolved, at a special council meeting, that a disciplinary hearing be held to hear possible charges of misconduct by Wessie. Wessie was eventually found guilty on four charges and the disciplinary committee recommended that Wessie be expelled as mayor and removed as councillor. Eden speaker Doris Naylor informed DA Western Cape leader Ivan Meyer, and Alan Winde and Theuns Botha of the recommendation on September 20, 2013.
On October 2, Assistant Director: Municipal Governance Simnikiwe Stemela acknowledged Naylor’s letter and requested documents bearing on the matter.
On October 16 attorney Bradley Conradie, of Horizon Forensics, provided an opinion on Wessie’s removal from office and as councillor, noting that Bredell had not yet accepted counsel’s recommendation of removal.
Bredell was clear, eventually, on a decision by April 15 – yesterday. This undertaking came and went like some prophesy – without effect.
The DA’s “Zero Tolerance” has yet again been exposed for the fallacy it is: Wessie, as well as his 9 Oudtshoorn caucus colleagues, stand as monuments in the Garden of Political Inconsistency – run by Blue Wave Promotions, celebrating the subversion of local government in service of power at all cost.
Look, I don’t think the DA should run a sand dune in the Arctic, and therefore I would prefer Wessie to stay – the damage he causes the DA brand can’t be bought in campaigning against the Blues.
