The Justice and Equality Front 24 March 2014. 11h30. A single failure of the political will to do the right thing, regardless of the consequences, set in motion like the ripples on a pond even more egregious conduct and corruption. The adverse effects of the cowardice, yet to be measured at the voting poles.
Will the DA leadership back their Councillor, Peter Roberts, or continue the cover-up in Oudtshoorn???
Will the DA finally turn on the Oudtshoorn caucus for the way in which the Pierre Nel settlement has been down played and covered up or will it stick to its guns, ignore its motto of zero tolerance against corruption, and still attack Roberts for blowing the whistle.
Last week the the DA chairperson of the Federal Executive, Wilmot James, the three committee chair persons of the Federal Executive,(Mmusi Maimane, Anchen Dreyer and Makashule Gana) as well as their parliamentary leader, Lindiwe Mazibuko received Roberts’ affidavit regarding the Nel settlement.
With this affidavit on their desks the truth is no longer “out there” – it stares them right in the face. So which way will they turn and which way will Anton Bredell, Helen Zille and James Selfe turn? And there are only two options open to them. They can continue to attack Roberts for blowing the whistle on his caucus or they can turn on the caucus and take decisive action.
There is no longer a window for Zille to say that she is “not adequately informed of all the developments in Oudtshoorn.” Bredell can no longer say that there is no solution for Oudtshoorn because he invited Roberts to give a solution and Roberts gave one ( “I suggest that we immediately replace all our PR councilors with strong, principle orientated DA members …”) to which Bredell never replied.
James Selfe will have to explain why he, on the one hand, told Roberts to tell the truth only later to try and bribe Roberts to join forces with the DA by giving his much needed signature in return for a position on the Mayco.
Now that all the cards are on the table the truth is so obvious that a blind man without a cane and guide dog can see it. And the truth is so simple it can fit into a nutshell much smaller than an Oudtshoorn ostrich egg: DA Councillor, Peter Roberts brought to the attention of his leaders the facts surrounding the Nel settlement and instead of acting swiftly and decisively against those who were part of it they decided to cover it up.
What started off as a few ripples caused by a pebble tossed into a large dam has now grown into a tidal wave of mistrust, deception and self preservation which makes nonsense of the DA’s policy of Zero Tolerance against corruption.
Peter Roberts told the truth about his fellow Councillors and was rewarded with expulsion without a hearing!
With Roberts’ affidavit, backed by proof of all his communications with Zille, Bredell, and Selfe it is hard to imagine that the senior leadership can continue to back McPherson and his overly trusting caucus. It is also hard to imagine that Zille, Bredell and Selfe will not find themselves in a position to explain their inability or refusal to act on Roberts’ information. But, this is the DA, the blasters of the honesty trumpet and perhaps they will continue to try and save face and blame it all on Roberts, stick to their guns and try to end his DA membership, which by the way, will be pretty difficult to do as the charge sheet against him is more incriminating to themselves than it is to him.
A week has passed since all the information has reached all those who should be informed and with the national elections only weeks away it will be interesting to see who the DA is prepared to crucify to keep its rather wobbly image of transparency and honesty.
