Drewan Baird. Oudtshoorn. 00 January 2014. 00h00. So… DA Mayor Wessie van der Westhuizen, Teflon Wessie, survived an ANC motion of no confidence in Eden this morning.
The DA caucus received instructions from Leeuwenhof and the Marks Building late Monday, threatening immediate expulsion for those members daring to challenge the party line.
A closed ballot was ruled out.
In the end DA councillor Johann Koegelenberg lied down on the political altar of expediency and proposed a counter motion seconded by the ACDP, die DA’s political partner in Eden.
All four DA councillors who indicated that they would vote against Wessie in a closed ballot, folded like wet face cloths and damp newspaper sheets and toed the party line.
The DA in Eden, also, is now bereft of all probity.
For the informed observer the voting suggests intricate political shenanigans. The current political dynamic in Eden demands discretion and I am not prepared to play into the hands of undeserving groupings. So I shall remain silent in this matter. But the mavericks do know that I know, don’t you guys?
That the DA stands for “clean government” is a grotesque joke; one of the most tasteless I’ve ever heard, and I know a few.
MEC Bredell again scintillates, coruscates, and fluoresces in political petit mal. This effete political functionary appears, for all practical purposes, to be profoundly unable to act in any way. Whether Bredell is present in any matter or not, makes no difference in outcome whatsoever. At the moment one of the things Bredell does not do, is rule of Wessie’s standing as a councillor. He has used every excuse in the book and then some. And now he still does… nothing.
Better so for the DA’s political foes. Wessie in a party gives the opposition all the more power.
But if I was a DA leader, I’d have a very close look at Wessie’s political allies. Allies also of Zille’s political enemies within. As I said, the current political dynamic in Eden demands discretion.
Helen Zille, and Theuns Botha will know precisely what I’m driving at.
Wessie may have an inkling, but he is simply not burnished enough to fathom the contingents. He just knows about survival. He still, for example, thinks that Zille and Patricia de Lille supports him.
So, we need some more sand to pass through the nape of the hourglass.
Perhaps next week, or soon thereafter, we can revisit today’s voting.
By the way… the two of you are known. Jip. You two. But you are already countered.
