Drewan Baird. Oudtshoorn. 12 December 2013. 05h05. There is, this morning, a deluge of comment on this story. None publishable, I daresay.
All I am prepared to add is that professional people may work for whomever they wish and have a right to sell their services at a price the client is prepared to pay. I have witnessed the professional courtesy among members of several bars and I am certain that this courtesy strengthens the integrity of our legal system.
Drewan Baird. Oudtshoorn. 11 December 2013. 21h45. In answer to a question by the ANC’s Lynne Brown, DA leader Helen Zille listed the following top 10 Cape Bar members briefed by the DA since 2009.
1. Jan Heunis
2. Nazreen Bawa
3. Ranjan Jaga
4. Ewald de Villiers-Jordaan-Jansen
5. Jan-Hendrik Roux
6. Brenton Joseph
7. Ismail Jamie
8. Ashton Schippers
9. Denzil Potgieter
10. Sean Rosenberg
The top 10 earned one third of the R58m legal spend by the DA Provincial Government since 2009.
Three members on this list is of interest to Oudtshoorn: Jan Heunis represented the speaker before His Lordship Mr Justice Andre le Grange; Ismail Jamie represented the Western Cape minister of local government before Ashton Schippers, now His Lordship, Mr Justice Ashton Schippers.
