Special Council Meeting in Bitou at 09h00;
Special Council Meeting in Eden at 14h00
Drewan Baird. Oudtshoorn. 26 September 2013.
15h30. If Eden – including the ENTIRE DA CAUCUS – wants Wessie out, WHY MUST OUDTSHOORN TOLERATE HIM!?
15h20. Eden this afternoon voted overwhelmingly to get rid of Wessie van der Westhuizen:
15 DA; 2 ACDP; 5 ANC; and 2 Icosa members voted to have Van der Westhuizen removed… Cope could not even muster a seconder for its motion to save Van der Westhuizen.
Ten members were absent with leave.
The Council will now recommend to MEC Bredell that Wessie be removed as Executive Mayor and Councillor.
13h55. Cope’s Adam van Rhyner was a no show at the Bitou Special Council Meeting.
Yet, it is apparent that the DA. / Cope alliance is breaking up.
Let’s see what happens in Eden at 14h00.
08h30. The special Council Meeting scheduled for 10h00 this morning has be cancelled for logistical reasons by agreement between the Speaker and the Chief Whips, in the light of yesterday’s letter from MEC Bredell.
A Special Council Meeting in Bitou will this morning consider motions of no confidence in the DA Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Speaker. Early indicators are that Cope will support the motions.
The George Herald reports today that Cope will also vote against a DA Caucus decision to accept the disciplinary recommendation to remove Wessie van der Westhuizen as Mayor and Councillor in Eden.
The report continues that “Cope announced that its councillor, John Maxim, will vote against the motion and also voiced the party’s unwillingness to remain a DA coalition partner in the Western Cape.”
Drewan Baird. Oudtshoorn. 25 September 2013.
17h25. It appears as if the ANC Coalition has secured a 13th vote in the Council.
This development comes as MEC Bredell informed the Mayor this afternoon that the Provincial Executive today postponed the deadline for the approval of the 2013/14 Budget until 29 November.
15h25. A Special Council Meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, at 10h00.
Only two items appear on the agenda: The 2013/14 Budget, and the IDP.
At 14h00 Eden’s Council will consider the recommendation of the disciplinary committee in the Wessie van der Westhuizen matter.
Cope, a DA Alliance partner, will vote against the DA tomorrow. Cope issued a media statement earlier citing a conspiracy, led by MM Godfrey Louw and Speaker Doris Nayler, against Van der Westhuizen; and has earlier indicated that they see no merit in the charges against Van der Westhuizen.
As the DA councillors are not expected to break ranks and vote contrary to a caucus decision to approve the disciplinary recommendation, it would appear as if van der Westhuizen will not survive tomorrow’s vote.
At this time there is no indication of how the ANC will vote.
