Lenard Jonas is called asunder up yonder

Drewan Baird. Oudtshoorn. 23 May 2013. 12h45. The Lord, so says the honorable immediate past member for Bitou ward 4, Councillor Lenard Jonas, has changed his calling from political to spiritual.
Yeeeeeah… gOds and faeries!
And the good, reanimated, vivified, quickened councillor was seen, over the week-end and on various occasions at that, in the presence of Madam Helen Zille and that other God fearing man with the unruly fists and indocile zipper, Bitou’s ANC Mayor in a blue T-shirt, Memory Booysen.
Could The Voice have been channeled through these agents in blue!?
Jonas, so the story goes, had resigned because of “ongerymdhede” (incongruities, although the word “deurdagtigheid” was used – no, I am at a loss, maybe some Voice will enlighten us all) in some office – it is unclear whether he referred to a municipal office or an ANC office… if there is a difference at all.
But, my longsuffering readers, I have been too long in the land to buy a ward resignation on “principle”.
Ye gods and gnomes and fair maidens attending all fairy tale princesses, I have known but one or two councillors that would have been willing to resign a gravy train seat willingly for “principle”… unless that principle was itself bought and paid for by a better deal yet.
In the presence of Helen Zille and Memory Booysen; hearing The Voice… I smell a rat, the mother of Conan-Doyle’s Giant Rat of Sumatra.
I am a bit of a Sherlock Holmes authority and in The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire (it wasn’t a vampire after all, as Holmes said to Watson upon receiving the brief, “We must not let him think this agency is a home for the weak-minded”) the sleuth refers to Matilda Briggs and then muses, “… not the name of a young woman, Watson, it was a ship which is associated with the giant rat of Sumatra, a story for which the world is not yet prepared”.
I intend to write that story, as a pastiche. Now there’s a great word to go look up: pastiche.
But back to The Calling of Lenard the Leaver …
Ward 4 is the home territory of the DA Bitou Constituency Chair, Elaine Paulse, who lost to Jonas by the trifling number of 125 votes in May 2011 before she hailed the Gravy Express as a proportional councillor.
And earlier this week Paulse issued instruction for DA members to start going door to door in the Kwano section of ward 4… we are never, are we not, without some evangelicalism in politics, are we now!?
Ward 4 is made up of half of New Horizons and a section of Kwano.
New Horizons was cut in 2 by the MDB at the insistence of the ANC. Clearly the thinking behind that was to not have a 100% coloured ward because their vote is unpredictable and in any event at the time it was quite clear that the ANC was losing the coloured vote and that it would largely go to the DA and therefore that ward 4 would be a safe DA seat.
This is the way the voting went in 2011 with the ANC winning by a very small margin:
ANC ward vote: 1,180 – 47.77%
DA ward vote: 1,055 – 42.71%
ANC PR vote: 46.70%
DA PR vote: 46.37%
Damn these little snot parties, don’t you know!
The close run probably indicates that Jonas has some personal following and Paulse less so. And that is what won the ward for the ANC.
If Jonas did resign over some internal ANC “thing”, the DA may well consider running him. The DA does not have prospective candidates in ward 4. Paulse and her husband have aggrieved many in a personal capacity and active involvement in the DA has suffered for years as a result.
The DA can most definitely win this ward and it is the best ward after ward 2 for them in which to have a by-election.
Never a dull moment!
