Oudtshoorn. 14 September 2012. 11h15. There is quite an outrage over this political advertisement in last week’s Herrie…
The Verwoerd Sq Mensa Chapter is thrown into incandescent fits of rage and indignation.
Apparently, the ad is perceived as depicting certain members of certain political parties as… monkeys.
Not so at all.
The three monkeys are known as Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil.
In the Western world the monkeys simply refer to those who deal with impropriety by turning a blind eye.
The ANC and the NPP and Icosa, thus sayeth the DA with this ad, are turning a blind eye to indecent or improper acts. It does not mean that the DA thinks the ANC; the NPP; or Icosa to be monkeys.
OO does, however, think the ANC; the NPP; and Icosa are monkeys.
As OO thinks the DA are monkeys.
OO thinks a true reflection of the Oudtshoorn council will include the fourth monkey, Shizaru, the one crossing his arms and which the DA omitted (probably by ignorance), who does no evil. And under Shizaru’s name OO would have copied MacPherson / DA.
Oudtshoorn’s councillors are nothing but monkeys.
But Mizaru, Kikazaru, Iwazaru, and Shizaru stand for something quite different. The image originates from a 17th century carving over the door of the famous Tosho-gu shrine in Nikko, Japan and probably was learned from an 8th century Tendai-Buddhist legend.
O, and before someone is outraged by me calling the Oudtshoorn councillors monkeys, I, a reluctant member of Homo sapiens sapiens wishing to belong rather to Pan pansicus, apologise unreseverdly to Mandrillus leucophaeus for insulting the species by comparing it to Oudtshoorn councillors.
