Drewan Baird. Oudtshoorn. 29 Mei 2012. 06h00.
Oudtshoorn. 27 Mei 2012. 17h55. Theuns Botha het aangekondig dat hy nie weer beskikbaar is as leier van die DA in die Wes-Kaap nie.
Dr Ivan Meyer het terselfdertyd sý beskikbaarheid aangekondig.
Hier is die mediaverklarings:
A time for new leadership
Today I announced that I will not be running for the position of DA Western Cape Provincial Leader this year. At a DA Western Cape Provincial Conference in Worcester, attended by almost 500 councillors, Members of Parliament, Provincial Parliament and the National Leader, Helen Zille, I have made my intentions known to make way for a new Provincial Leader for the DA in the Western Cape.
I was first elected as Provincial Leader for the DA in the Western Cape in November 2001. I took over as provincial leader when the party experienced great difficulty and successfully led the party through the past 11 years to great victories in the Western Cape.
There was no pressure from any individual or circumstances to give up the leadership. A good leader knows when to step down and this is my time as Provincial Leader. I will still be available for other leadership positions in the party, for example provincial chairperson. With my knowledge and experience I will be able to assist and guide the new leader.
The DA in the Western Cape is also in the process of expanding the Executive Council. The purpose being to enlarge it and make it more representative. The Western Cape Provincial Congress will take place in October 2012, during which time the new Provincial Leader and executive council will be elected.
Thank you to the National Leader, Helen Zille for her tribute to the work that I have done for the DA in the Western Cape. I would also like to thank all the voters and the Party for the support I have received over the last decade. The DA has grown in the Western Cape because we made it better together.
Statement issued by Theuns Botha, DA Western Cape provincial leader, May 26 2012
Candidacy for DA Western Cape Leadership
At the DA provincial council meeting held in Worcester on Saturday, 26 May 2012 Provincial Leader, Theuns Botha, announced that he will be stepping down as DA Provincial Leader in the Western Cape. Theuns Botha, the Minister of Health in the Western Cape and Leader of Government Business, will continue to serve the DA Western Cape in other leadership capacities. He is a visionary leader and I will continue to work with him in his current capacity and his future role within the Democratic Alliance.
After extensive consultations with the leadership of the Party I have resolved to stand as a candidate for Provincial Leader in the upcoming Provincial Congress to be held on 13 October 2012. Until such time I will continue to serve the Party in my capacity as DA Federal Deputy Chairperson. The DA in the Western Cape has grown as a major force in the political landscape of South Africa under it’s current leader Theuns Botha. I have worked very closely with him over the last three years and I am ready to continue growing his legacy and increase our electoral support in the Western Cape.
Our strategic objectives for 2014 are clearly spelled out, targets well defined and the plan to deliver is achievable. In the months to come we will rally our support base towards redress, reconciliation, diversity and delivery. We will see more DA public representatives across the province to increase our visibility and increase our electoral support base. I also realize that governing well is the best weapon to win votes. We will continue to govern well but will focus on our targeted communities and on implementing our DA Western Cape Strategic Plan, 2014.
The road towards 2014 is clear and I will mobilize the Party structures to roll out our plan, meet our targets, increase our diversity and excellence, create social inclusion and drive our key agenda to grow the economy, create jobs and reduce poverty. I am ready to serve and lead the DA in the Western Cape.

OO-lesers kan nou werklik nie deur hierdie verwikkellinge verras wees nie.
Botha is ‘n deurwinterde politikus; Meyer ‘n voortreflike kandidaat. OO se mening in Saterdag se berig – ‘n Nuwe OO – word maar net deur hierdie interessante tango onderskryf.
