Oudtshoorn. 11 April 2012. 14h17. On March 5, OO was ready to publish a story with national ramifications when a Western Cape Minister asked that it be kept back.
OO auquised, in the name of responsible journalism and for the later bigger benefit of Oudtshoorn.
The issue was revisited in mid-March, and again this last week.
A decision was reached to publish the story on Friday, but yet again the Minister provided compelling reasons to hold publication back.
The story will now be published on April 20, all else being equal.
This is the sms communication between OO and the Minister this Sunday last.
From OO at 07h13: “… clearly this story must now break.”
08h14: “Drewan. If it breaks prematurely I will have to keep those crooks in employment.”
08h26: “It’s not up to me… The story’s out there. I’m NOT threatening; the story simply won’t keep much longer! It’s not as if I’m short of Oudtshoorn news, mind. Zille; Botha; Bredell; Fransman screws up more than I can write!”
09h24: “There you are. Be patient and wait for the big one.”
OO is also holding back on the next installment of the Eden Bibery Case as a politician has begged leave to meet with OO before publication.
OO warned since Monday last that the explosive third installment was due today and still this politician, not one of the accused, waited until the very last moment to plead for an extension.
At he bottom of both cases the issue at hand is lethargy.
